The piece ‘Breath Out’ was developed by Kalsy in Winter 2022 at K2 Jewellery Academy, for her portfolio. This exciting and interactive project was made in response to the subject of stress and breathing as a form of stress-relief.
Artist’s statement about her project' ‘Breath Out’
For the school project 'Body Language', the object manifests my feelings towards the sense of suffocation that came from stress and negativity. The playful action of blowing into the metal piece is cathartic and implies the ideal process of stress relief.
Experiencing the accumulation of stress has caused me to sigh and shortness of breath, balloons in this circumstance signify the containers of negativity. I was inspired by the precedent Kirsti Reinsborg Grov who engaged with jewellery for play, and the research on playing suggested it has a positive impact on productivity. To create a satisfying effect, I focused on the big contrast of the materiality of hard brass encompassing soft rubber. The lung-shaped metal case is a strong restriction that forces the balloons to distort and eventually pop.
About the experience at K2 Academy:
While studying the preparation course for Master studies at the RCA, K2 Academy helped with materialising my creative ideas. Because I did not have any knowledge on jewellery before this, the course has developed my crafting skills and jewellery making. Private tutor Petra has taught me the basic process and discussing the schoolwork with her has given me a more clear direction on making.
